Chicago — The Mother Goose known for laying eggs and raising babies atop a Peoples Gas facility has returned once again this spring — just in time for Mother’s Day. Peoples Gas’ North Shop, located at Peterson and Pulaski, has a grassy roof where the mother goose has made annual nests. This is the fifth straight year she’s done it, and this year seven goslings hatched from the eggs.
The baby geese have spent the last few weeks waddling around the lush greenspace, as the momma goose and her mate keep close watch.
The building’s “Green Roof” is both a safe place for the growing goose family geese, and it’s environmentally friendly in other ways. The roof was intentionally designed to be covered with grass and other vegetation that soaks up sunlight and naturally insulates the building.
As in past years, when the time is deemed right for the goose family, team members from the local Forest Preserves come to the roof and carry the goslings to ground level. The mama flies down to meet them and lead her babies into the nearby woods.
