On June 3, Peoples Gas hosted a public forum to update Chicagoans on work underway to retire more than 1,000 miles of aging pipe from the city’s heating system. The forum was held in-person at Peoples’ Gas’ Central Shop in the Little Village neighborhood, and was also streamed live online (a recording of the livestream can be viewed below).
The forum covered a wide range of detailed topics including updates on construction that started earlier this year, plans for upcoming and future work, and plans for ongoing community and customer communications. Forums like this are held twice per year and are among the many ways Peoples Gas is keeping customers, state regulators, other stakeholders, and all Chicagoans informed of what work is happening, how it’s being done, and what it will look like if it occurs in their neighborhoods.
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last year directed Peoples Gas to retire old pipes in order to ensure ongoing safety and reliability in the city’s heating system. The ICC set an accelerated deadline of Jan. 1, 2035 for completion of the work.
