Chicago — Peoples Gas today unveiled Chicago, a shih tzu/poodle mix known for loving the outdoors, as its new safe digging “ambassadog.” Chicago’s new job title was announced at the Peoples Gas North Shop, where the pup proudly stood before cameras.
Chicago has spent a lot of time in Alaska, which made him highly adventurous. He also loves his toys, going on lots of walks, and is bilingual. He understands English and Spanish.
Chicago became Chicago’s safe digging ambassadog after entering the Peoples Gas “Doggone it!” contest. Six hundred dogs were entered in the contest, thousands of votes were cast, and Chicago’s sturdy paws and strong focus made him the top dog. For the next year, Chicago will be featured in Peoples Gas promotional campaigns to raise awareness about safe digging and the importance of dialing 811 at least 72 hours before starting any digging project.

Chicago’s big win was announced today because it’s National 811 Day (8/11), a day to elevate awareness about the need for people to call 811 before starting any outdoor digging project.
Digging without knowing where utility lines (e.g., natural gas, electric, water, sewer, communications) are located can lead to line strikes, serious injury and property damage. When Chicagoans call 811 at least 72 hours in advance, expert technicians will come out, at no charge, and mark the spots where underground utility lines are located. Calling 811 or going to 811 Chicago before digging is easy, it’s free and it’s the law.
