Chicago — Peoples Gas has unveiled Mushroom, a Rottweiler known for unearthing a vast array of buried treasure, as the company’s new safe digging “ambassadog.” Mushroom’s new job title was announced at the Peoples Gas North Shop, where the pup proudly stood before cameras.

Mushroom digs passionately, dreaming of tunnels that lead to endless belly rubs — but a nicely buried stick is plenty satisfying to him as well. He’s also found lost toys, and even a time capsule left in his yard by a previous homeowner. Apart from digging, Mushroom loves chasing frisbees and tennis balls, and barking at the mail carrier.

Mushroom became Chicago’s safe digging ambassadog after entering the Peoples Gas “Doggone it!” contest. Thousands of votes were cast, and Mushroom’s sturdy paws and sweet puppy eyes made him the top dog. For the next year, Mushroom will be featured in Peoples Gas promotional campaigns to raise awareness about safe digging and the importance of dialing 811 at least 48 hours before starting any digging project.

About 811 Day and safe digging

Mushroom’s big win was announced just ahead of National 811 Day, which is Sunday, Aug. 11 (8/11). It’s a day to elevate awareness about the need for people to call 811 at least two days before starting any outdoor digging project.

Digging without knowing where utility lines (e.g., natural gas, electric, water, sewer, communications) are located can lead to line strikes, serious injury and property damage. When you call 811 at least 48 hours in advance, expert technicians will come out, at no charge, and mark the spots where underground utility lines are located. Calling 811 or going to 811 Chicago before digging is easy, it’s free, and it’s the law.
